The Case of Elliott Smith - True Crime & Music

The death of Elliott Smith was ruled a suicide, but many close to the singer were never fully convinced.

The untimely death of a celebrity is always a shocking and tragic event, triggering an outpouring of grief from fans across the world. What is more, when a public figure takes their own life, there can often be an added layer of hurt that heightens these already tragic occurrences.

However, when it was announced on the 21st October, 2003 that American musician and singer-songwriter Elliott Smith had passed away by suicide, no one was surprised. Perhaps in one of the more theatrical suicides ever reported in recent decades, sources claim Smith thrust a knife into his heart while in the midst of an argument with his then girlfriend and fellow musician Jennifer Chiba.

“This did not come as a surprise to many friends and followers, as Smith had garnered a reputation over the years for his melancholic music. Some of the dominant themes across Smith’s music related to depression, addiction and drug and alcohol abuse, all things he had experienced first-hand throughout his 34 years. The singer was coined 'Mr Misery' and had a reputation for being difficult to work with and all around the 'unhappiest man in the land'.

However, close friends claim that in the year leading up to Smith’s death he had begun to change his tune. The singer had overcome his long battle with drugs, and was reported to have been working on a new album, provisionally entitled From a Basement on a Hill. Furthermore, many credit Smith’s newfound optimism to his budding relationship with Jennifer, a member of a local punk band, Happy Ending. Additionally, Smith’s autopsy began raising further questions.

Smith’s autopsy revealed a lack of hesitation wounds on his chest, something that would typically be present for someone about to stab themselves, an incredibly painful and uncommon way to end one’s own life. Further, colleagues and acquaintances of the couple claim Chiba’s behaviour in the time leading up to Smith’s death was suspicious, raising questions regarding her involvement.

Allegedly the pair were known for their spectacular and volatile arguments, described as a ‘Sid and Nancy couple’. Chiba declined all requests for interviews after Smith’s passing, but less than a year later filed a lawsuit against Elliott’s family for 15% of his earnings. Chiba claimed that Smith had promised to provide for her and support her for the rest of her life.

Posts on various Elliott Smith fan pages and forums cite Jennifer’s behaviour as an unusual way to mourn the passing of your partner. Furthermore, due to the uncommon way in which Smith died, family and close friends have come out and questioned if the singer’s passing was truly an act of suicide or if an argument between himself and Jennifer had gotten out of hand. Others have questioned if others had been in the house with the pair that day, if Smith had relapsed into his old ways and had invited bad company over.

Consequently, rumors and questions began spreading in the weeks after Smith’s passing: what at first seemed like an undisputed suicide now had family, friends and fans questioning what had truly happened that day. While the investigation is still classed as 'ongoing,' it seems there may not be any clear answers anytime soon.

No matter the result, this tragic end certainly did not define Mr Misery, his music is still well known across generations and he will continue to be known for his ability to capture the most delicate and complicated human emotions, transforming them into song.
