Virgin, Lorde's new album, is finally out!

lorde

Only two months after her announcement, Lorde has released her latest album, Virgin.

Following her 2021 release Solar Power, Virgin sees Lorde examining her life through a new lens. Touching on themes of gender, family and womanhood, she takes a bittersweet look back on her twenties.

Building on Melodrama, which explored the chaos of teen life, Virgin reflects on the uniquely beautiful and often painful moments of your twenties. However, Lorde doesn’t shy away from the trials and tribulations of this decade. The album’s overarching theme is the complicated process of coming into adulthood, whether or not you feel like an adult, and navigating the ultra-highs and deep lows that define this formative time.

Favourite Daughter explores familial relationships in adulthood. The singer delves into the complex feelings that arise when parents want better for their children, how that hope can also become a source of pressure and expectation.

Why’d you have to dream so big
Look at the medals I won for you

GRWM is another standout. It reflects on the starry-eyed vision of adulthood held in girlhood, and how those childlike dreams often clash with reality. Lorde addresses her younger self, offering healing and perspective:

I wanna punch the mirror to make her see that this won’t last.

Virgin is a beautiful reflection on navigating your twenties, blending orchestral and electronic rhythms into a sonic journey that mirrors the calm and chaos of young adulthood. With a fresh, evolved sound, the album retains Lorde’s signature gift, capturing the melancholic, bittersweet memories of youth in words that resonate.
