Despite having a pretty busy agenda, on July 31 Ariana Grande managed to release her new album Petal, a follow-up to Eternal Sunshine. She said that she might have needed "an extra brain and four arms" in order to complete it and release it: she was pretty busy touring and with Wicked. Despite this, she decided to continue pursuing her career and embrace a new stage in her life.
Her fourth album combines sweet, spicy and explosive sounds, all panned in different directions to create a perfect and surreal atmosphere. This album has become significant, a new chapter in the career of the Italian-American singer.
The album features songs that explore different themes. In particular, songs about toxic relationships serve as a Trojan horse for deeper reflections on the toxicity of fame. Much like We Can’t Be Friends could be interpreted either as a heartbreak anthem or as a rejection of the parasocial relationship with the press, the title track Petal and Hate That I Made You Love Me explore more deeply the idea of living in the shadow of someone else’s insecurities and existing as a projection of another person. Whether those projections come from a lover, critics, or someone else entirely is left deliberately open to interpretation.
This was a new experience where Ariana, in collaboration with producers ILYA and Max Martin, explored and overcame negative thoughts, while also trying to help her fans feel supported when going through a breakup, a toxic relationship or any other difficult circumstance in their lives.
This new chapter comes at a particularly significant moment for Ariana, who has recently announced her intention to temporarily step away from the public eye after the end of her Eternal Sunshine Tour in order to reassess the balance between music, acting and her personal life.
After being continuously involved in the music industry for fifteen years, this new album could represent a completely new beginning for Ariana’s approach to her artistic career. It was a new challenge for the artist and allowed her to explore and develop different songwriting and composing tools.
Fans will always continue to support her music and look forward to new albums and new projects throughout Ariana’s career. However, this new chapter could lead Ariana to look at her own journey with different eyes, not only from an artistic point of view but also from a personal one.
