Even though the heat lingers in Southern Europe, autumn is (or should be) just around the corner. The sun sets earlier and all you want is to stay indoors, snacking on nuts or sipping a pumpkin spice latte. There’s nothing better than calm, reflective indie music for this time of year. Here’s a selection of five songs from our little corner of the world, perfect for autumn.
Colapesce Dimartino – Musica leggerissima
This Italian pop anthem, which placed fourth in the 2021 Sanremo Festival, talks about playing “musica leggera” to avoid falling into the black hole of apathy. Its retro pop sound contrasts with lyrics full of existential emptiness in everyday life. Ideal for listening to on afternoons when darkness comes early and the day falls silent.
IOLANDA – Juro Já Nem Paro
Before being chosen as Portugal’s representative for Eurovision 2024, the singer-songwriter from Coimbra released this ballad about moving on after a love that has cooled. With violins and cellos, it conveys the mix of vulnerability and determination of someone who still hopes but won’t stay frozen anymore. Perfect for autumn walks by the sea or chilly strolls that make you bundle up.
Judeline – chica de cristal
Judeline builds an intimate ballad with soft strings, minimal drums, and ethereal effects, reminiscent of Jeanette’s seventies style. The lyrics speak of fragility and sadness, of retreating indoors and isolating from the outside world. A song to listen to while curled up under a duvet as rain taps the windowpane.
Selini, Papazó – Flert
The Greek indie duo make digital flirting into a light, ironic, and warm-groove song. It talks about messages, lost connections, and dry humor, all in a relaxed tone that fits autumn afternoons in cafés or walks through the city with dry leaves underfoot.
sélpide – el tapiz de los fantasmas
The Andalusian singer-songwriter turns personal identity into a vast tapestry of stolen threads. Atmospheric dream pop envelops you in memories and ghosts of the past. Reverb-heavy production and hazy guitars create a melancholic, foggy landscape, perfect for the most reflective moments of the season, like All Saints’ Eve.
