Everybody Scream is Florence and The Machine’s newest album, and with the release of her sixth LP, Florence Welch reminds listeners that she still has plenty of raw vocals and primal energy left to give.

Although many years have passed since her debut Lungs in 2009, clear parallels can be drawn between the two albums, offering a glimpse into the ever-evolving mind of Florence Welch. The album titles themselves draw parallels, each paying homage to her greatest instrument, her voice. These lungs that scream in frustration and create moments of beauty remind us never to underestimate the weapon that is one’s own voice.

Themes of witchcraft, a fascination of Welch’s, continue to appear throughout her work, as she sings of life and love like a curse of transformation. In an interview with Rolling Stone she explained, “How I make sense of the world is to turn it into myth and fable.” In this sense, Welch feels like a natural successor to Stevie Nicks, channeling a similar blend of fantastical lyricism, bohemian flair, and powerful, enchanting vocals.

In Everybody Scream, Welch’s personal trauma is stitched into the very fabric of the album. Two years ago, she suffered a miscarriage, and not long after, nearly died following an undetected ectopic pregnancy that required life-saving surgery. As a result, themes of motherhood, loss, and rebirth permeate the record. Yet, the songs never feel powerless or defeated. Welch’s voice burns with raw, fiery ambition.

The album radiates empowerment as Welch confronts burdens many mothers face, reflecting on how her life as an artist might have been different had she been a man. Ultimately, she honors the resilience of all women in One of the Greats:

“It must be nice to be a man and make borin’ music just because you can…
It’s funny how men don’t find power sexy, So this one’s for the ladies, one of the greats”

Overall, Everybody Scream captures the catharsis that comes from the most primal form of release: screaming at life’s inhibitions. With echoes of her earlier work and a strong, cohesive theme, Everybody Scream is a powerful addition to Florence and The Machine’s discography and absolutely worth a listen!
